The Real-time PCR Laboratory

The PCR section of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine's Clinical Diagnostic Laboratories has provided trusted services to the veterinary community for over 25 years. The PCR Laboratory utilizes real-time PCR technology, which is much more sensitive, specific, and reliable than many other testing methods. Our turnaround time is 3-24 hours, one of the fastest veterinary diagnostic turnaround times in the country. This is crucial when treatment is dependent on a diagnosis. We offer over 100 individual tests and panels for equines, canines, and felines.  All tests are validated to detect down to 10 copies of each pathogen.  Sample types can include, but are not limited to nasal secretions, feces, EDTA whole blood, tissue, CSF, culture, washes, and environmental.

Frequent offerings include:
  • Equine herpesvirus 1
  • Streptococcus equi subsp equi
  • Equine/Canine/Feline Respiratory Panels
  • Equine/Canine/Feline GI/diarrhea Panels
Research

In addition to veterinary diagnostics, we provide a platform for multifaceted, multidisciplinary research at UC Davis and the academic and private sectors. Our services include project set up, DNA and RNA extraction, qPCR assay design, and quantitation of nucleic acids using hydrolysis probe-based chemistry for gene expression and the detection of genetic diseases (allelic discrimination).
