Dean Mark Stetter’s Message on Supreme Court Decision Ending Affirmative Action
In the wake of the recent Supreme Court decision regarding the use of race in college admissions, Dean Mark Stetter offered this comment:
“Our unwavering dedication to a diverse and inclusive educational environment remains at the forefront of our mission. By fostering inclusivity and preparing students from all backgrounds, we ensure that the future of the veterinary profession reflects the rich tapestry of our society. A diverse veterinary workforce not only enhances the quality of care provided but also allows us to better address the unique needs of our communities.”
He echoed Chancellor Gary May’s statement as well as that of UC President Michael Drake.
Since the consideration of race in admissions was banned in California 27 years ago by Proposition 209, admission policies will not change at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.
“We continue to modernize our outreach programs and admissions practice to increase the diversity of our applications, enrollment, and retention to meet the needs of the public we serve,” said Karl Jandrey, associate dean of Admissions and Student Programs. “Our focus on diversity spans every facet of our scholars’ experiences: first generation or veteran status, future professional roles (i.e. academic/industry/governmental/private practice, rural/urban setting), as well as socioeconomic and cultural background, to name a few.”
