Dentistry/Oral Surgery Team Presents at Leading National Scientific Conference

Drs. Boaz Arzi and Maria Soltero-Rivera of the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service recently attended the American Association for Advancement of Science (AAAS) annual conference where they presented on stem cell and other regenerative medicine therapies.
Dr. Soltero-Rivera presented the poster “Distinctive Characteristics of Extracellular Vesicles from Naïve and Cytokine-Stimulated Feline Adipose- and Placenta-Derived Stromal Cells” on her groundbreaking work with stem cells and regenerative medicine.
AAAS is divided into multiple sections based on particular areas of science. Section R covers Dentistry and Oral Health Sciences, of which Dr. Arzi is a member-at-large of the steering committee, the first veterinarian to hold that position. He presented “Regenerative Veterinary Medicine as a Translational Platform for Human Therapies,” which discussed the potential to translate scientific discoveries in the field of regenerative therapeutics from veterinary species to novel, safe and effective human therapy. Specifically, his topic covered regenerative work in the oral and craniofacial region as a platform for translation.
“This is the first time that veterinarians are involved in Section R,” said Dr. Arzi. “We were thrilled to see our work recognized and appreciated by the highest scientific organization in the U.S.”
Founded in 1848, AAAS is the world’s largest general scientific society and publisher of Science and other journals. Its mission is to “advance science and serve society” through initiatives in science policy, international programs, science education, public engagement, and more.
