UC Davis Among Association of American Universities Leading Efforts in the Fight Against Bird Flu

Last week, the first human death as a result of infection with highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1, or bird flu was reported. According to the Louisiana state health agency, “The patient contracted H5N1 after exposure to a combination of a non-commercial backyard flock and wild birds.”

While bird flu still poses low risk for most people, the death highlights the urgent need to accelerate efforts to contain the disease. America’s leading research universities, including UC Davis, are crucial partners in these efforts along with federal, state, and local agencies. As we wrote a few weeks ago, many AAU members are hard at work searching for answers that could help us control the spread of H5N1 and find effective treatments.
