Clinical Chemistry

The Chemistry section of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine’s Clinical Diagnostic Laboratories is staffed by four clinical pathologists, all of whom are board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP), Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS), and health laboratory technicians (HLTs).  The chemistry department provides service to the hospital’s veterinarians and veterinarians of California, the United States, and other countries, and we accept samples from all non-human species. We also support the diverse research community of UC Davis and other public and private entities. Testing for research can be tailored to meet specific study needs.

Services

General Biochemistry

Our general chemistry analyzers, the Roche Cobas® c501 and c311, allow for automated high-volume output. They are complemented by a Nova Stat Profile Prime® ionized magnesium and Advanced® micro-osmometer. Onboard clot detection, liquid level sensing, and serum index measurement ensure reliable results.
Targeted and comprehensive biochemistry panels have been tailored by organ systems and species. Additional tests include:

  • Bile acid and Uric acid
  • Diabetes: Fructosamine
  • Reactive phase proteins: canine C-reactive protein (CRP) and equine serum amyloid A (SAA)
  • Pharmaceutical drug levels: Amikacin, Phenobarbital
Coagulation and Fibrinolysis Testing

Analyzers include the Haemonetics® thromboelastography (TEG), and Stago STA® Compact Max coagulation analyzer. Tests offered include:

  • PT, PTT, and Quantitative Fibrinogen
  • Quantitative D-dimers or Fibrin Degradation Products (FDPs)
  • Von Willebrand Factor antigen (vWF)
  • Thromboelastography (TEG)
Endocrinology

Immunoassays on the Immulite 2000XPi analyzer include:

  • Adrenocortical Axis Tests: ACTH and cortisol
  • Thyroid Tests: Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH), Total T4, Free T4, and Thyroglobulin Autoantibodies (TGAA)
  • Gastrointestinal/Pancreatic Tests: Vitamin B12, Folate, Canine Trypsin-like immunoreactivity (TLI)
  • Reproduction Hormones: Progesterone
  • Cardiac Markers: Troponin-I
Urinalysis
  • Urine chemistry: dipstick and chemistry analyzer
  • Urine sediment evaluation
