Goal 4 - Advance the Well-Being of Animals and People in California and Around the Globe

Strategy 4.1.  Prioritize School Resources that Focus on Initiatives to Address Societal Needs

Tactics:

  • Promote programs that seek transdisciplinary approaches to address societal needs
  • Continue to assess and prioritize the distribution of resources and assignment of program priorities to maximize resource investments and maintain financial sustainability
  • Improve general understanding and interactions of all programs within the school by promoting integrated meetings, conferences, and retreats

Strategy 4.2.  Enhance Local and Global Communications, and Engagement to Advance the School’s Impacts

Tactics:

  • Continue to promote recognition of the school as a leader in transdisciplinary approaches to advance animal, human, and environmental health
  • Enhance programmatic and communication efforts for regional, state, and global recognition to expand outreach and leadership opportunities
  • Expand global health impacts through international engagement of faculty, staff, and students
  • Foster innovation and interaction with constituents, industry partners, government agencies, scientific communities and other stakeholders on current issues
  • Identify and address developing or future societal problems related to animal, human, or environmental health (e.g., climate change, global food security)
  • Advocate for animal well-being with evidence-based information to inform policy and political engagement
  • Analyze communications and social networks to understand where we are connecting, or not connecting, with stakeholders; use data to guide future communication approaches
  • Seek ways to leverage and synergize regional, state, and national organizations and programs to advance animal, human, and environmental health (e.g., California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System)
  • Promote and support training for program teams to optimize communication efforts, methods, and impacts to increase recognition of science discoveries by target audiences, university constituents, stakeholders, government agencies, and the public

Strategy 4.3.  Increase Multicultural Awareness and Outreach to Underserved Populations and Communities

Tactics:

  • Enhance diversity, inclusion, and multicultural awareness of faculty, residents, staff and students
  • Create opportunities and seek ways to reduce barriers for faculty, staff, and students to engage with underserved communities regionally, state-wide, nationally, and internationally
  • Explore campus-wide collaborations relevant to the school’s mission (e.g., Aggie Square Initiative, etc.)
  • Encourage partnerships with organizations and groups that promote global outreach and multicultural awareness (e.g., Rotary International, FAO, Academics without Borders)
  • Emphasize and support programs that utilize comprehensive approaches to understand animal and human health issues including economic impacts
  • Develop partnerships with schools and programs that enhance faculty, staff, and student goals in diversity and inclusions, multicultural awareness, and strengthen academic and research programs
  • Strengthen recruitment programs to increase diversity of students, staff, and faculty to reflect California’s demographics (included in Goal 1)
  • Develop metrics to measure improvements in multicultural awareness and diversity and inclusion goals

Strategy 4.4.  Promote and Support the One Health Approach to Advance the Mission 

Tactics:

  • Build stronger relationships with campus partners (e.g., College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences) through shared research, educational, and outreach programs involving One Health approaches
  • Communicate the impact of One Health approaches to stakeholders, government thought leaders, academic partners, and the public
  • Continue to foster student opportunities to participate in One Health programs to gain leadership and technical skills, knowledge of societal issues, and enhance their international experiences

Strategy 4.5.  Advance Strategic Communications and Use Information Technologies to Demonstrate Program Success and Impacts of Education, Research, and Outreach Programs

Tactics:

  • Promote programs that demonstrate impacts to address societal issues (e.g. CAHFS detection of animal disease, disaster preparedness, community outreach programs, etc.)
  • Expand outreach and public communication training for faculty, staff and students including communications at the forefront of disasters, disease outbreaks, and research discovery
  • Seek effective ways to use technology and data sharing to expanded outreach and impact of our programs
  • Explore machine learning, telemedicine, and digital communications to enhance education, research, and outreach programs
