Dr. Rachel Hanford, a third-year resident in medical oncology received the Edward L. Gillette Memorial Award for Outstanding Research Poster Presentation, presented recently at the annual Veterinary Cancer Society Conference. 

“To look at her now, you wouldn’t think anything happened to her,” exclaimed Andrea Barbee owner of Tessa, a 5-year-old border collie who was kicked in the head by a horse.

The UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine received the 2026 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence and Distinction (HEED) Award from Insight Into Academia magazine, the largest and oldest publication dedicated to best practices in higher education. 

A free bilingual training program developed by the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine and The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine has received global recognition from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

Some of the most difficult cancers to treat occur in the brain. Despite decades of research, outcomes for many children, adults and companion animals with aggressive brain tumors have improved little.

UC Davis is bringing together experts from human and veterinary medicine to help change that trajectory.

A pioneering study at the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine, funded by the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation, is utilizing advanced, blood-based technologies to understand the underlying causes of copper hepatopathy in Labrador retrievers and develop non-invasive diagnostic tools for this silent disease. To support this vital research and encourage participation, the cost of the liver biopsy is covered for enrolled dogs.

Dr. Ceri Weber has joined the Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Cell Biology as Assistant Professor of Integrative Physiology.

Dr. Weber earned her BS in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology from the University of Washington in 2013 and her PhD in Cell Biology from Duke University in 2020. Since 2020 she has been a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology, at the University of California, San Diego, CA working with Dr. Kimberly Cooper.

Dr. Hugues Beaufrere and Dr. Michael Ziccardi have been appointed as Co-Directors of the California Raptor Center (CRC).

Dr. Eduardo de Souza Ribeiro has joined the Department of Population Health and Reproduction as Associate Professor of Theriogenology. 

Dr. Ribeiro received his BVM (2008) from Santa Catarina State University, Brazil; a MS (2011) in Animal Science and a PhD (2015) in Animal Molecular and Cellular Biology, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL.

Dr. Karolynn Ellis has joined the Department of Surgical and Radiological Sciences as Assistant Professor of Clinical Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Ellis received her BS (2018) in Animal Science and her DVM (2022) from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY.  She subsequently completed a combined Small Animal Rotating and Specialty Orthopedic Medicine and Research Internship (2023) at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO. Ellis then returned to Cornell University and completed a residency (2023-2026) in Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.
