Peter C. Kennedy Endowed Fellowship in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology
Submission Deadline: February 12, 2024
Fellow Announced: April 2024
The goal of the Peter C. Kennedy Fellowship is to support excellent post-DVM graduate trainees working towards the Ph.D. degree that are either board certified or eligible in the American College of Veterinary Pathologists [ACVP]. Applicants with a research emphasis in veterinary anatomic pathology are encouraged to apply, especially those whose research emphasizes the pathogenesis of naturally occurring diseases of animals that might not otherwise be supported by federal agencies focused on human health (e.g. by NIH).
The Kennedy Fellow for 2024 will receive a stipend of $35,000 per year. The student’s mentor is expected to fund the balance of the fellow’s tuition, fees, benefits, and research-related expenses.
Review of Applications: A committee convened by the Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Education consisting of 2 current faculty members of the Anatomic Pathology group, an ACVP diplomate and alumnus of the graduate training program in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology not currently a member of the UCD SVM faculty, and 2 scientists from the UCD community who are experts in naturally occurring diseases of domestic animals.
Application: Download the 2024-2025 GSSP application (.doc), and indicate you are applying for the Kennedy Endowed Fellowship by checking the appropriate box on the first page. In addition, applicants must succinctly describe how their proposed project relates to and advances the field of anatomic pathology. Applicants to the Kennedy Endowed Fellowship and their mentor(s) must incorporate training strategies that will facilitate and eventually result in a student who is qualified for board-certification by the ACVP, and who will complete a thesis research project that includes morphological and mechanistic description of a spontaneous disease of animals.
Candidate Selection: Selection is based on the quality of the research application, the academic record of the candidate, and the mentor’s commitment to research in modern veterinary anatomic pathology. The mentor’s letter of support must address their ability to support the Kennedy Fellow’s stipend and research costs in subsequent years.
